Grow a Peach Tree from Seed

All the research I’d done for growing a peach tree from seed said you had to do a few months of cold stratification in order for the seed to germinate. I found a short cut of this process that goes from seed germination to a pot in 14 days. Here’s my journey for growing a peach tree from a store bought peach!

1. Extract the peach seed from the peach pit. I used a channel lock wrench to break open peach pit while covering it with a paper towel.

2. Place the seed in a cup of water over night. This makes the seed coating easier to peel.

3. Peel the peach seed coating the next morning. Scrape it with your fingernail and then peel it off in parts. Careful with the pointed end as that is where the root will begin to grow.

Day 10 update: I turned the container around and now the root is on the left. Root growth on the left and the seed split is forming leaves.

Seed to germination to planting in a pot in only 14 days. The picture above is on day 26 – much faster then using cold stratification. My other peach seeds in the refrigerator still haven’t even split yet…

  1. I did the same process with 3 seeds. On 1, the shell cracked but no root growth yet. Another has very small root growth (1/4”) and the 3rd has a little more root growth (1/2”). It is only day 12. My question, why the dark towel? I did do it tho with all 3. Can I use a seedling heat mat or put the cups under grow lights to stimulate root growth so I can pot them? Or just let them run the course and maybe a few more days in the cups under the towel?

    1. It would probably be ok without the towel but in my previous research it said to keep it dark. That’s why started with the dark towel. I’ll probably try it again without the towel for an experiment. How did yours turn out?
